Resistome analysis of wastewater treatment plants in Agadir city, Morocco, using a metagenomics approach

Water scarcity is a global issue, and treated wastewater is a promising solution. However, the proliferation of Antimicrobial Resistance Genes (ARGs) poses a challenge to safe and sustainable use. A study in Morocco found 223 ARGs in wastewater treatment plants, highlighting resistance to various antibiotics. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected, indicating their role in ARG transmission. While many wastewater treatment methods reduce gene material and pathogens, a significant fraction of ARGs persists, posing risks to human health and the environment.
